WORLD OF TANKS: PUTIN AGAIN VIOLATES THE MINSK AGREEMENTS CONCENTRATING TANKS IN OCCUPIED LUHANSK

Michael MacKay, Radio Lemberg, 13.04.2018

Ukrainians living under Russian occupation in Luhansk have spotted a large concentration of Russian armed forces armour and military equipment in the environs of the city. It is believed that the tanks and infantry fighting vehicles will be used for a parade on May 9.

The armour and equipment is stationed at the training aerodrome that is to the south-east of downtown Luhansk city. Defunct since 1997, the airfield was once the home of the Voroshilovgrad (Luhansk) Higher Military Aviation School for Navigators. All of Luhansk city is under the control of the Russian armed forces, including this airfield.

Russia has stationed its tanks and self-propelled artillery and infantry fighting vehicles a mere 13 kilometres from the Siverskyi Donets River at Stanytsia Luhanska. The river there marks the battlefront where Putin’s invasion army has been at a stalemate for over three years. The Minsk Agreement of 11 February 2015 requires that the “sides” keep heavy weapons away from the “contact line.” The agreement stipulates a security zone at least 50 kilometres wide for artillery systems of 100-mm caliber or greater; 70 km wide for Multiple Rocket Launching Systems (MLRS), and 140 km wide for MLRS “Tornado-S”, “Uragan”, “Smerch” and tactical missile systems “Tochka” and “Tochka-U.” Ukraine abides by the Minsk Agreement one-sidedly. Russia is flaunting its violation of the Minsk Agreement.

France and Germany are the guarantors of the Minsk Agreement. President Macron and Chancellor Merkel should not ignore the blatant signal that Putin is sending them. If they do, the Kremlin dictator will be even more convinced that there is no price to pay for his invasion of Ukraine and his breaking the Minsk Agreement. When Russian tanks parade through the streets of occupied Luhansk on May 9, it will be a calculated insult by Putin to his effete, appeasing, oath-breaking enemies in the West.

PS. Meanwhile, at the battlefront, Russia escalates more in Ukraine as it is pressed more over Syria — its military forces mounted 66 attacks on Ukrainian army positions in Donbas in the past 24 hours, with one Ukrainian soldier reported as killed in action and another one as wounded.
