Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin will be the ‘winners’ of fake elections to be conducted in Donbas. The Russian Federation is going through with the charade of voting on November 11 to flaunt world opinion, to violate the Minsk Agreement, to break Ukrainian law, to demonstrate that it can do anything it wants in any territory that falls under its power, and to insult the ideal of democracy as the genuine expression of the people’s will.
Leonid Pasechnik is the figurehead of the Russian-created terrorist organization “Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR).” Denis Pushilin is the figurehead of the Russian-created terrorist organization “Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).” LPR and DPR are the names the Russian invaders give to their occupation regime in eastern Ukraine.
The Security Service of Ukraine (the SBU) has revealed the results the Russians intend to provide. The head of the SBU, Vasyl Hrytsak, said on November 9 that it is expected that Pasechnik will win with 63% of the ‘vote’ in the so-called “LPR” while Pushilin will win with 55% in the so-called “DPR.” Turnout will be announced as 70%.
Actual turnout will be miniscule. Workers for public institutions that were taken over by the Russian invaders will be compelled to show up at the polls and pretend to vote. Members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have already gone through the charade of voting. Ukrainians under subjection have no compelling reason to vote, unless they want to take advantage of some giveaways on offer, such as free phone credits.
Vladimir Putin is violating Article 4 of the Minsk Agreement of 11 February 2015. This provision requires that local elections in eastern Ukraine be conducted only under the laws of Ukraine.
Putin is going against the will of the world community. Every Western democracy has told the dictator of the Russian Federation that he must not do this. The United Nations and the European Union have warned Putin to stop. Expecting more appeasement from the West, Putin is going ahead anyway.
Greatly encouraging Putin in his international outlawry is that he has received an invitation to Armistice commemorations in Paris on the day that he will force fake elections to take place in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine. Inexplicably, French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Vladimir Putin to Paris to mark 100 years since the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War.
President Macron has taken the disastrous step of inviting Putin despite that fact that a century ago Russia had nothing to do with the conclusion of fighting against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Russia had signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on 3 March 1918, ending its participation in the Great War. When the First World War formally ended on 11 November 1918, the Bolshevik regime of Muscovy was waging all-out war against the Ukrainian National Republic. A century ago, the Russians were in Ukraine and killing Ukrainians just as they are today.
The French president has gravely insulted the Ukrainian people and fractured Western unity against Russian aggression by inviting Putin to Paris. While Macron is giving Putin a propaganda victory, Russian invaders will be shelling and shooting at Ukrainian defenders and civilians in Donbas. Russian occupiers will be conducting fake elections.
“Lest we forget” are the words spoken on Remembrance Day. This November 11, by appeasing Putin in Paris and by allowing fake elections in Russian-occupied Ukraine to proceed, it is clear that we in the civilized West have indeed forgotten the meaning of the sacrifice made by millions of people in the Great War.
