The Olympics have two noble ideals: fair competition in sport and peace. That means that for the duration of the Olympiad athletes obey the rules of competition and the countries they come from refrain from going to war. These were the ideals of the Olympics in Ancient Greece, and they are the ideals of the modern Olympics since they were revived in 1896.
For the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Russian athletes violate the rules of fair competition by having engaging in a state-sponsored doping scheme to cheat. The Russian Federation violates the Olympic Peace by invading Europe in Ukraine – something Russia has been doing since immediately after the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Russia does not belong at a sporting competition among civilized nations, and Russian athletes should not be at the PyeongChang Olympics.
Russia was banned from competing as a country at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The reason is that Russia engaged in a state-sponsored doping scheme over many years that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called an “unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport.” Many Russian athletes were stripped of the medals they had “won” at Sochi and at earlier games. Drugged up athletes from Russia cheated competitors from other countries of victories which were rightfully theirs. The Putin regime planned, co-ordinated, and executed this doping scheme to corrupt the Olympic movement and bring stolen glory to Russia.
Bizarrely, although Russia was not allowed to compete as a country at PyeongChang, Russian athletes are competing as a group called “Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR).” After formally stripping Russia of a national presence at the Olympics, the IOC has in practice completely restored Russian collective identity under the OAR name. The insidious poison that is Russia has been put back into the body of the Olympic movement.
The Olympic Peace has been shattered by Russia. On the day of the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Russia has been invading Europe in Ukraine, in Crimea and Donbas, for 3 years, 11 months, 21 days. On February 9, Russian armed forces attacked Svitlodarsk, Novooleksandrivka, Bohyslavske, Novhorod, Luhanske, Zaitseve, Pisky, and Slavne in Ukraine. Russian armed forces attacked Eastern Ghouta in Syria, capping a four-day bombing campaign targeting Syrian civilians which left 237 dead, 1,250 injured, and seven hospitals destroyed. That is the Putin regime at war.
The IOC made a terrible mistake allowing athletes from Russia to compete at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. By its cheating at sports with drugs and by its war-mongering, Russia is death to the Olympic movement. Fair competition is destroyed by the presence of Russia, thinly disguised as OAR, at PyeongChang. The Olympic Peace is shattered by Putin’s wars. Because the IOC was not true to its ban on corrupt Russia, honest athletes will have their victories tainted and innocent Ukrainians and Syrians will die in Putin’s wars that have not stopped.
