The Russian army invading Ukraine in Donbas has been engaged in an escalating campaign of heavy shelling since March 24. The invaders from Muscovy need a constantly resupply of guns, ammunition, fuel, and war matériel. On May 8, Russia sent the 76th military resupply convoy across the Ukraine-Russia border to the 1st Army Corps (Donetsk or so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic”) and the 2nd Army Corps (Luhansk or so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic”). Those are Russia’s front-line units waging war against Ukraine.
As is always the case, Russia refused to allow the convoy of reportedly 40 trucks to be inspected by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, by the International Committee of the Red Cross, or by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. As is always the case, Western democratic countries other than Ukraine took no notice of this act of war by Russia. As is always the case, Kremlin propaganda pushed the lie that this was a ‘humanitarian convoy’ and Russian TV and Internet propagandists actively spread this false narrative.
This is the 76th time Russia has resupplied its invasion army by truck convoy. Ukrainians know from experience that bombardments and assaults by Russian armed forces against defenders and civilians in Donbas will get much worse in the coming days.
The real story is this was the 76th military resupply convoy. But the news of Russia’s act of war is covered up by the fake story that this was the 76th humanitarian convoy. That is the Kremlin lie that will grab the headlines.
The 1st and 2nd Army Corps are formations of the Russian armed forces that are led by Russian officers, paid by Russia, armed and equipped by Russia, and acting solely in the interests of Russia. They are Russian soldiers. But Russia uses a confusing mix of regular soldiers, contract soldiers, private military company soldiers (mercenaries), and irregular soldiers to make up the invasion-occupation army that is fighting in Donbas. The cannon-fodder troops are a mix of Ukrainian citizens and Russian citizens, but the officer class is all Russian.
The press service of the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, reported that currently – four years into Russia’s war against Ukraine – the make-up of Russian soldiers in Donbas is between 2,500 and 10,000 regular troops of the Russian army. But the bulk of Putin’s army is made up of troops who are formally ‘resigned’ from the Russian army the moment they cross the international frontier to join in attacks against Ukrainians in Donbas. President Poroshenko called out the Russians on the Kremlin lie of ‘volunteers’: “They have almost 50,000 so-called 'Russian volunteers' who were recruited through the Russian mobilization system and sent to Donbas. They pretend they are not regular army soldiers, but they are Russians by nationality. They use Russian weapons and ammunition.”
Ukraine is being invaded by soldiers who are from Russia. But the news of Russia’s act of war is covered up by the fake story that there there is a ‘crisis in Ukraine’: there is a ‘civil war’ in Ukraine and the soldiers are ‘pro-Russian militants or separatists or rebels.’ But soldiers subject to Russian command-and-control cannot be militants and soldiers who are Russian citizens fighting inside Ukraine cannot be separatists or rebels.
The Western press is failing to report Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Western press reports from Moscow and not from Kyiv. The Western press remains Russo-centric and Soviet Union nostalgic, and is profoundly ignorant about Ukraine. That is why Kremlin lies grab the headlines.
Russia sent the 76th military resupply truck convoy to its army invading and occupying Ukraine in Donbas. That news is not being reported. Instead, the Western press repeats the Kremlin lie that 76th so-called ‘humanitarian convoy’ was sent to Donbas – or they don’t report the story at all.
The soldier that are killing and wounding Ukrainian defenders and civilians in Donbas are Russian soldiers. That news is not being reported. Instead, the Western press repeats the Kremlin lie about ‘pro-Russian separatists’ – or they don’t report the story at all.
The truth about Russia’s war against Ukraine must be known and it must be told. Russia sends military resupply convoys to its army invading and occupying Ukraine in Donbas. They’re not a humanitarian convoys. Soldiers attacking Ukrainian defenders and civilians in Donbas are Russian soldiers, not pro-Russian separatists. Kremlin lies must not be allowed to grab the headlines. As Shakespeare has Launcelot say in “The Merchant of Venice”: “But at the length truth will out.”
